This much sought-after version of the ‘Brazilian Butterfly’ is distinguished by its rich, matt purple leaves which lack the darker margin of the more usual form.
A prize plant for a cool room or conservatory, sporting dainty, triangular leaves held on fine stems like a flutter of purple butterflies. In summer it produces sprays of white or pale pink trumpet-shaped flowers. An additional curiosity of this unusual species is that like butterflies closing their wings, the leaves fold down at night, reopening in response to higher light levels in the day. RHS Award of Garden Merit.
Height and spread: 10-20cm (4-8in).
